New Entrants and Year One in Room 3 with Laura Engel

Room 3 is part of the Kowhai (junior) block.
Welcome to Room Three, (the best class ever:))
We begin each day joining the rest of the school to sing our school waiata. We continue singing in class with our Hello song and a song about the Days of the Week. We use English, Māori and New Zealand Sign Language to learn through roles such as; Mathematicians, Readers, Writers, Scientists, Technologists, and Artists. We welcome visitors to our class to learn with us.
He aha te mea nui o te ao. He tāngata, he tāngata, he tāngata
What is the most important thing in the world? It is people, it is people, it is people.

School Closed - Ideas for learning at home

16 April 2020

Kia ora whanau,

It has been lovely seeing some of you on Zoom at 10 o'clock. If you are having difficulty connecting with the link I have sent please email me at and I will try to help you.

We are very fortunate to have Joy, our amazing office administrator working with us. She has created a social story about Covid-19 that you can read to/with your child. Here is the link Social Story Covid-19

Kia ora whanau,

Home packs have activities for ‘letter of the week’ and name writing grids. Miss R has also included some art activities. There is a lot of learning that can be done around your home. I encourage you to talk a lot about anything and everything with your child. Please keep checking the website for more ideas. Be kind to each other.

Other ideas you might try include -

  • Going on a letter or number hunt - children could look at advertising brochures, newspapers, magazines or books.
  • Playing ‘I hear with my little ear something that sounds like, e.g. ‘a’ (be sure to say the sound such as ‘a’ in apple, ‘a’ in apron).
  • Following instructions and/or counting while playing or doing chores; e.g. “Please put five toys away.” “Put the blue block on top of the red block.”
  • Playing board games, card games, imaginary games.
  • Talking about halves and quarters when cutting up pieces of fruit or vegetables.
  • Baking, making a sandwich, making toast.
  • A website you might like to look at for some great ideas is nzmaths.

Kia kaha, Arohanui,

Laura Engel
